An introduction to Seedsman: Cannabis Pioneer and InnovatorRecent Posts
Tiger One is the leading Seedsman distributor in Europe.
Seedsman is one of the pioneers of the cannabis industry. Starting in 2002, it has evolved and expanded to become one of the leading seedbanks in the world. It is at the forefront of cannabis innovation being the first company to sell autoflowering as well as CBD genetics. With operations in Spain and the UK, Seedsman offers its own premium quality genetics, currently 56 strains with new strains being added, while also maintaining one of the most comprehensive libraries of cannabis seeds including more than 2,000 strains from 65 different brands.
Tiger One sat down with the team at Seedsman to learn a little bit more about who they are, what motivates them and their vision for the future of cannabis.
Can you tell us a little bit about how and why you got started
Seedsman was initially started in the UK where the cultivation of cannabis remains illegal without a Home Office License. We started Seedsman in 2002 to challenge existing drug laws and to encourage education, discussion and debate. We were confident that over time the perception of cannabis would change, people would learn more and legal barriers would shift. We wanted to encourage liberalisation, and create a brand focused on quality of product and service and which would last the course of time.
One of the founders of Seedsman was an early hemp pioneer and had made connections with the breeders from Sacred Seeds, and Cultivators Choice: THE experts in cannabis breeding & genetics at the time….and still now. We signed them up as suppliers, at a similar time to them supplying GW Pharmaceuticals, with their original genetic material. We have since gone on to work with a lot of the best breeders internationally being first to the market with many new strains including commercialising the first auto-and CBD genetics.
After ten years we moved the business to Spain where cannabis laws and the cultivation and use of cannabis are more relaxed. It gave us the potential to be a little more confident in what we sold and why. We were able to focus more on quality & diversity of strains and exploring how they grow under different conditions.
What inspires the company?
As lifelong cannabis enthusiasts, we are dedicated to cultivating the spirit of cannabis globally. The seed is central to our ethos and is the beating heart of our company. The beauty of growing cannabis, or any plant from seed for that matter, is witnessing the incredible growth and unfolding of potential that arises from such humble beginnings - if tended and nurtured well.
We believe that cannabis can make the world a better place: it can lift the spirit, provide a remedy for anxiety or pain, provide respite from numerous medical conditions, and offer a soothing balm for the soul. Cultivating the plant is a practice that can root you firmly in nature and connect you to a diverse cannabis community worldwide. This company philosophy is what motivates us to continue to lead innovation, support a change in global legislation and champion genetic diversity and accessibility.
What have been the major successes for Seedsman and what are you most proud of?
We are pleased to still be among the best innovators in the industry. Auto-flowering genetics were simple at the time but revolutionary. We’re very proud to have worked with The Joint Doctor on his early varieties and to have been the first seedbank selling autoflowers. Auto strains have come a long way since then. We were also one of the first major seedbanks to really push CBD varieties – Cannatonic & Therapy. These have made a huge difference to many peoples’ lives.
What are Seedsman’s most popular strains?
Alaskan Purple, available as photoperiod or auto, is a firm favourite due to its generous yields, adaptability, sweet taste and characteristic purple hues. Gelat.OG (photoperiod and auto) is well loved for its mouth-watering taste, great yields and potent high. Peyote Gorilla is extremely popular for the strong high it produces and its abundance of resin - making it great for extracts.
What’s next for Seedsman, any new strains to tell us about?
We’ve recently introduced several new strains to the permanent range which we’re very excited about. Purple Ghost Candy is a cross between Ghost OG and one of the very best recent Purple cuts, Candyland Purple. It’s connoisseur quality - potent, high yielding and highly resinous. We’ve also launched new medicinal Seedsman strains that emphasise the production of two lesser-known cannabinoids CBDV and THCV. You may or may not be aware of these cannabinoids, but on account of their potential therapeutic effects, they warrant a place in the experimental medical grower’s garden.
What developments in the cannabis industry are you excited by and how will these impact operations at Seedsman?
We are really excited by the countries who say they will allow domestic cannabis cultivation. We believe people should be allowed to grow their own cannabis – either for medical or recreational purposes. Just the cultivation in itself is restorative before even consuming cannabinoids, terpenes etc.
What are your hopes and dreams for the next decade?
Legalisation of domestic cultivation federally in the US with a knock on effect around the world. We’d like to see a legalisation model similar to the wine industry – bigger players, smaller players, individual players – all focusing on the quality of their own products.
