When feminised seeds were first introduced to the wider market, the hassle of cultivating male plants was gone.
Produced to ensure all the resulting plants are females, feminised cannabis seeds are a breeder’s secret weapon. While male plants can help with a breeding program, some growers are only interested in creating a supply of buds. Thus, the development and subsequent evolution of feminised cannabis seeds have totally revolutionised the cannabis industry over the last few decades.
Regular seeds were standard in the past. These seeds were usually a 50/50 male and female seeds split. This one in two chance often frustrated growers who usually had to double their seedling numbers for the best chance of female plants.
These days feminised seeds flower as female plants only through this genetic modification. With the removal of every male chromosome, the chance of growing a female-only plant went from 50/50 to 99%.
Cannabis that grows in the wild is usually hermaphrodite plants, which means they contain the physical traits of male and female. This genetic profile comes as a result of needing to self-populate. Most commercialised plants have hermaphrodite genes bred out of them in a time-saving measure. Quality feminised seeds are incredibly resistant to developing this gene, especially when cultivated in the correct conditions. Feminised seeds are created by a grower breeding two female plants together, ensuring their offspring will be female. This is achieved by spraying the juvenile flowers with gibberellic acid or colloidal silver to alter their development.
The pollen sacs are harvested, and the ‘female’ pollen used to harvest buds of another female plant. This results in the seeds developing with just female genes. As male plants can fertilise multiple females, the popularity of feminised seeds continues to significantly aid the future preservation of cannabis strains for generations to come.Shop ByShopping OptionsPriceTHCBreeder/BrandFlowering TypeVariety
